Winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Steven Spielberg's first Oscar (no pun intended) for Best Director. And rightfully so, Schindler's List is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest and most powerful film of all time. And, he did it for free. Spielberg refused to accept a salary for this film claiming it would be "blood money." The money he would have earned was put towards The Shoah Foundation. Schindler's List is a timeless masterpiece that will live on for generations to come.

The film presents the indelible true story of the enigmatic Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, womanizer, and war profiteer who saved the lives of more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. It is the triumph of one man who made a difference, and the drama of those who survived one of the darkest chapters in human history because of what he did. The film also includes the stories of many Holocaust survivors, without veering away from the central story.

Schindler's List won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Music, Editing, and Art Direction. PICTURE Unlike most Spielberg films, the presentation of this DVD is not pristine. However, that does not make the picture out to be anything less than amazing. The transfer is outstanding, given the fact that the original print was not perfect. And rightfully so, the film was intended to have film grain and look more like a documentary than a big budget picture. Personally, I believe the slight imperfections give the film a better sense of realism.

SOUND

The dialogue in this film is very clean and clear, as the audio mix doesn't use the surround speakers frequently. They mainly come in use during the scenes with large crowds and the more disturbing moment of the Holocaust when innocent people are murdered or there's chaos in the streets and the ghetto. Mixed with award winning John Williams beautiful score, the sound of Schindler's List is excellent and effective.

SPECIAL FEATURES Voices From the List (77:22)

With an introduction about Schindler's List by the film's director himself, Steven Spielberg speaks of his experience meeting with survivors of the Holocaust, followed by interviews with survivors of the Holocaust. The testimonies given by these individuals are as moving, if not more powerful, than Schindler's List itself, that I myself can not explain in words how touching this documentary is. It truly is one of those pieces that you must see to understand. Interviews were provided from the archives of Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation.

The Shoah Foundation Story With Steven Spielberg (11:26)

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this short piece features Steven Spielberg speaking about the goals he set out for the Foundation and footage from the archives. High school students also share their knowledge on how the Foundation was educational for them, giving insight into what the Foundation has achieved.
