"According to a source familiar with the matter, Paramount Pictures, which last month agreed to buy DreamWorks SKG, is talking to billionaire investor George Soros' about selling DreamWorks' film library. If the deal happens the rights to all 69 movies in Dreamworks' catalog would be owned by investor George Soros' private equity group.
The move would help finance Paramount's $1.6 billion purchase of DreamWorks, which will expand the Viacom studio's slate of movies to as many as 16 a year from the 11 it had planned. Soros' fund originally approached Paramount about the possible purchase of the library back in November, before Paramount studio outmaneuvered NBC Universal to buy DreamWorks.
Last month, Paramount Chief Financial Officer Michael Dolan mentioned that the studio plans to end up investing as much as $500 million to $650 million in DreamWorks. This deal would bring Paramount the talents and services of DreamWorks co-founders Steven Spielberg and David Geffen who in 2006 plan to produce four to six movies for the studio.
Even if the sale is too happen, Paramount would still continue to collect a fee for distributing the films in the library, which includes such hits as ''American Beauty'', ''Gladiator,'' and ""Saving Private Ryan"", despite the fact that it no longer owns them.
