Mark Burnett Productions and DreamWorks Television have filed a complaint with the US District Court in Los Angeles, claiming that Mexico's Azteca International ripped them off over a Spanish-language version of the duo's reality boxing show The Contender.
Contender Partners, the joint venture behind the series, licensed two seasons of Contender to Azteca for dubbed broadcast on TV Azteca. Later, according to the complaint, Burnett and co pitched Azteca a Spanish-language version of the format to be shown on Discovery Channel.
Then, according to the document filed by Contender Partners' lawyer, John Gatti: "Azteca defendants secretly contacted Discovery and proposed that the two networks coproduce a new Spanish-language version of The Contender called Retador Azteca that not only infringed trademarked names for The Contender but also copied the same theme, format and concept of The Contender."
